How to Help Balance Your Blood Sugar Without Meds

Updated: Nov 15, 2023

Happy healthy woman at the beach

Do you believe balancing your blood sugar levels is a concern only for people with diabetes?

Do you notice your energy levels go up only to crash down soon after?

Do you then find you need a caffeinated drink and/or something sugary to get your energy back up?

This sends your blood sugar on a crazy rollercoaster ride!

Did you know balancing your blood sugar can also help you reduce inflammation?

People with diabetes must closely monitor their blood sugar levels, but the truth is that everyone should pay attention to their blood sugar levels for their best health.

I’m going to preface this with I’m not a doctor. Check in with your doctor before changing anything and follow their advice. If you are on meds I’m not telling you to stop taking them.

Whether you are on meds or not these are natural strategies that may help you balance your blood sugar without meds.

Let’s talk about the benefits of balancing your blood sugar, benefits of keeping your blood sugar within a safe range and four areas to focus on to help your blood sugar stay stable throughout the day.

Listen in or read on below to learn more about how you can naturally balance your blood sugar.

6 Benefits of stabilizing your blood sugar:

  • helps you avoid long-term health issues

  • managing your weight

  • just feeling good

  • helps keep your brain healthy

  • your energy levels stable

  • your mood balanced

4 Benefits of keeping your blood sugar levels within a safe range:

  • live longer

  • improve your mood

  • increase your energy levels

  • lose unwanted weight faster

Here are 4 areas to focus to help your blood sugar stay stable throughout the day:

Eat Low Glycemic Load Foods

Foods with a low glycemic load are digested slowly and release glucose into the bloodstream gradually over time instead of all at once.

They are beneficial for maintaining steady blood sugar levels throughout the day instead of having drastic highs and lows in between meals.

Foods with a lower glycemic load include non-starchy vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower, raw nuts and seeds, and high-fiber fruits like granny smith apples, pears and berries.

If you eat snacks make sure they include healthy protein and good fat as this will provide sustained energy throughout the day without sudden spikes in blood sugar levels.

Get Enough Sleep

Research has shown that adequate sleep is essential for managing your blood sugar levels since it improves your body's ability to process glucose naturally.

Poor sleep quality is associated with higher fasting morning glucose concentrations which can cause fluctuations in blood sugar during the day if left unchecked.

Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep every night and stick to a consistent sleep schedule to maintain healthy blood sugar levels throughout the day.

Exercise Regularly

Do you need a reason to exercise? I know some do!

Regular exercise can help regulate and balance your blood sugar levels. It allows your body to use glucose more effectively by increasing the sensitivity of your cells to insulin.

Additionally, aerobic exercise can decrease the amount of glucose entering your bloodstream after meals.

Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise at least 5 days a week. You can break the 30 minutes up into multiple sessions of exercise and still reap the benefits.

Do something to raise your heartrate. That could even be a fast-paced walk or a brisk bike ride. This is also a great way to reduce stress!

Eat Enough Real Food

If you're skipping meals, eating unhealthy foods or eating erratically throughout the day, chances are your body may have a difficult time regulating its natural balance of sugars in the bloodstream.

Eating enough real food comprised of healthy proteins and good fats will provide your body with a steady energy rather than spikes followed by dips which can lead to unhealthy cravings throughout the day.

Don't get me wrong... done properly fasting and intermittent fasting are very beneficial and something I do implement. I'm actually currently fasting right now. This topic is for another discussion.

Your best health starts with adequately managing your bodies' natural balance, including blood-sugar levels.

Before I started changing what I ate and my lifestyle habits I suffered with hypoglycemia.

This is the opposite of Diabetic symptoms. If breakfast was late or I didn’t eat on time for lunch I would get very cranky, hangry, shaky and had even passed out a couple times. My blood sugar would drop too low.

Now I don’t experience any of those symptoms and have even fasted for as long as 36 hours. I never would have been able to do that before I started eating real food.

Following these tips helped me balance my blood sugar without meds. They may also help you maintain healthy glucose levels so you feel energized throughout the day without spikes or energy drops due to imbalances caused by an insufficient diet or poor lifestyle habits. You may also be able to balance your blood sugar without meds.

All of these tips will help you prevent craving sweets, lose unwanted weight and increase your energy levels.
