Drop These 3 Things for Your Emotional Health!

Updated: Nov 10, 2023

Are you feeling stressed and overwhelmed?

It’s a horrible feeling! It doesn't have to be your norm.

Negative information and negative thoughts are bombarding you every waking moment and maybe even during your sleep.

You have to be intentional to guard yourself from all the negativity swirling about you.

Listen in or read on below for three things to drop for your emotional health.

Consuming too much news.

Are there any happy fun stories in the media? It seems like you have to go out of your way to find something happy or funny.

Even if you don’t want to see the latest stories in the news they seem to pop up on your phone and entice you to look into the story more.

Before you know it, you’ve been sucked in.

Unfortunately, it seems that most of the stories in the news aren't happy and many create fear. So, this can make you feel like everything that's happening locally, nationally and/or in the world is terrible.

What happened to all the hero stories? The amazing pet stories, where the pet saved the family from a home fire in the middle of the night? I know we still have two-legged and four-legged heroes out there.

If you know that watching news media brings you down:

  • What if you limited your time on news media?

  • What if you turned off those apps on your phone that make news articles pop up on your phone randomly?

  • What if you unsubscribed to those news sites that come to your email inbox or funneled them into a special folder in your email so you didn’t see them when they came in?

Hanging around toxic people.

You probably have toxic people around you. Undoubtedly everyone does.

And they may not be toxic all the time.

They could be people you work with, acquaintances or maybe even close friends and family members.

Some people are more difficult to be around than others.

You know the ones.

Some may even live under the same roof.

So, what do you do?

Protect your heart! If things start to get uncomfortable or toxic know that you can politely excuse yourself and walk away. You don't have to stay and be a part of their toxic behavior.

If you can’t leave, then let them know that you are NOT going to be involved in that conversation.

Know what you are a NO for and stand firm.

They are not the boss of you!!

Scrolling social media.

UGH!! Social media can create so many negative feelings.

Honestly, when you scroll these days, it's like Russian Roulette. You have no idea what may pop up on your screen next.

There's no way to control your feed to only show those things that are going to be positive and happy.

Personally, I'd love to only see the amazing sea life and animal videos. I wish I could! ;)

And even if you run across happy positive things from your family and friends sometimes that can set you up for comparison and take you down an ugly path.

I know we all get sucked into the scroll sometimes if you are on social media.

So, if social media is a place that you find a lot of negativity or creates negativity for you than what if you limited the amount you're on social media to certain times or even an amount of time? Say only 1 hour at lunch or even only 30 minutes per day? Maybe even wean off.

I know a lot of people that are leaving social media for a certain time period or maybe never planning to come back. And I hear it's been a really great thing for them emotionally.

Consuming too much news, hanging around toxic people and scrolling social media if you are on it, all can create negativity, make you depressed, cause anxiety, wreaking havoc on your emotional health.

Remember you are the boss!

You can control these things and how much, if any time, you spend with them.

Do any of these things create negativity in your life? Will you limit or cut them out of your life?
